Utilant is the leading provider of Loss Control software for the Property & Casualty Insurance industry. Our software, Loss Control 360 – a property inspection management system – is used by insurance carriers to inspect complex risks in over 150 countries worldwide. As Lead of our Data Science team you’ll have the unique opportunity to build and oversee a dedicated team of Data Engineers and Data Scientists who will have access to vast amounts of insurance underwriting data from 10’s of millions of inspections and other data sources challenged to solve fun and unique use cases utilized by our existing and expanding clientele. Work alongside heads of product, marketing, engineering, and C-level executives to apply modern statistics and machine learning techniques to reduce loss of life and property. The ideal candidate will be a generalist with a broad range of experience in data engineering, statistics, and data science. The candidate will need to balance showing value in the near-term with working towards larger longer-term efforts

Position responsibilities:

  • Mentor and manage a team of Data Engineers and Scientists including their projects and performance
  • Establish goals and prioritize work assignments based on product roadmap and client requirements
  • Facilitate building and expanding our ML team within the organization
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and C-level executives to provide support to customer objectives and goals in a professional and organized manner
  • Build and maintain reliable and scalable data analysis pipelines
  • Augment data with the required annotations (data labeling) that are necessary to be used in machine learning training models
  • Store, query, and analyze data as well as deploy trained ML models and model output in a cloud computing environment (AWS, Azure or GCP)
  • Understand and articulate the feasibility and data requirements necessary to develop and build models/solutions for a given business use case by applying statistics, machine learning, and predictive modeling
  • Design, build, deploy and test production ready machine learning products while interpreting and explaining the basis for predictions/models generated
  • Identify opportunities and potential use cases by developing data strategies through analyses of existing and 3rd party data sources
  • Experiment with early stage use cases to determine viability and success
  • Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques
  • Research and evangelize new machine learning technologies

Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in either R or Python
  • Experience with distributed version control systems (Git or equivalent)
  • Working with larger than laptop-memory datasets e.g. in BigQuery, Redshift, Spark/Dask clusters, Hadoop, Hive, etc.
  • Understanding of cloud-based platforms and services such as AWS, Google Cloud, and/or Azure
  • Practical experience designing and building production ready micro-services
  • Ability to prioritize use cases and remove/discern ambiguity
  • Professional, accountable, and reliable with excellent organizational & time management skills

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of professional experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred)
  • Experience deploying, monitoring and maintaining data science deliverables, e.g. consumable REST APIs which encompasses/wraps model predictions
  • Proficiency in SQL and relational databases like Microsoft SQL Server or equivalent
  • Large-scale data processing and analysis experience preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of unstructured data and machine learning technologies
  • Proven experience with planning, execution, vision and success of complex technical projects
  • Strong communication and technical skills
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
